I'm on severe financial hardship (social assistance) and I just received a letter from my credit card company with a $12,000 debt. The credit limit on that card was $3,500. They just "found" me. I haven't heard from them for several years, but I was working and got sick. I'm not back at work yet. Do they have the right to demand payment? I don't really know my rights and I'm not sure what to do! I also contacted legal aid and I'm waiting for a response.

Legal aid can help you determine whether or not this debt is time-barred.

I can confirm that bankruptcy would release you from this debt, at minimal cost.
