If I go bankrupt, am I able to apply for a credit card or car loan if I have a co-signer?
For credit cards, here is the applicable rule, according to the Superintendent of Bankruptcy Canada:
"A bankrupt is not required to surrender a credit card in their possession or control to the trustee for cancellation when:
a) the credit card is issued to a third party (e.g., employer, spouse, friend, relative); and
b) the trustee has assurance that the issuer or third party has allowed the bankrupt to continue to possess and use the credit card."
For car loans, you will need to disclose your bankruptcy status to the lender, who will then decide whether or not to grant you a loan with a co-signer. It is advisable to discuss this with your trustee beforehand.
